EMS Mobile Application

We were tasked with analyzing existing Emergency Medical System (EMS) mobile applications to identify usability gaps in requesting emergency help, tracking ambulances, receiving on-route updates, and communicating with emergency responders. Our goal was to bridge the gap between users and emergency services through an intuitive, reliable, and accessible design solution.

Problem :

Emergency medical apps in India face usability issues, causing delays in requesting help, tracking ambulances, and communicating with responders. Accidental SOS activations further burden emergency services and distress users.

Solution :

  • 5-second SOS confirmation to prevent accidental alerts

  • Voice-activated SOS for hands-free emergency use

  • Offline SOS via SMS to work without internet

  • Large and clear SOS button for faster and easier access

  • Real-time ambulance tracking to see help arrival status

  • Automatic alerts to emergency contacts with location updates

  • Cross-device support (phone, smartwatch, voice assistant)

  • Medical record sharing to help paramedics treat faster

Challenge :

  • Accidental SOS activations due to sensitive touch

  • Poor UI with small and unclear emergency buttons

  • Difficult to use for elderly and disabled users

  • Internet dependency makes SOS unreliable in low network areas

  • Lack of real-time ambulance tracking accuracy

  • No proper confirmation before sending SOS

  • Sync issues between phone, smartwatch, and other devices

  • Medical information not easily accessible to responders

Summary :

This project focused on improving the usability of EMS apps by identifying key problems like accidental SOS activation, poor accessibility, and internet dependency. Through user research and analysis, we designed solutions such as SOS confirmation, voice activation, offline SMS alerts, and real-time tracking. These improvements make the EMS app more reliable, accessible, and efficient, helping users get faster and safer emergency assistance.
